Los Gigantes Car Hire

Los Gigantes Car Hire — Frequently Asked Questions

The practical questions UK travellers actually ask before hiring a car on Tenerife's west coast — from no-excess firms and the airport drive to parking, Masca access and licence rules. For deeper detail, follow the links through to our full guides.

Do I need to hire a car in Los Gigantes, or is it walkable?
The resort core is walkable for those content to stay between the marina and Playa de la Arena. However, there is no direct bus to the airport, Teide, or Masca, and the 477 to Costa Adeje runs only every 60 minutes. For Garachico, Icod, whale watching or the almond-blossom routes above Santiago del Teide, a car is essential. Many visitors hire locally for a portion of their stay rather than every day.
Which firms have no excess and no deposit?
Cicar/Cabrera Medina, Las Rosas and Autoreisen all operate without a deposit hold and with full cover built into the rate. SantiagoRent and TMMS also include full cover — verify the deposit position when booking. This is the standard west-coast model, not a premium upgrade.
How long is the drive from Tenerife South Airport?
Around 35–40 minutes over 42 km: TF-1 westbound, Exit 87 onto TF-46 towards Playa San Juan, then TF-47 north. Allow extra time on night arrivals — the final descent is steep and poorly lit. See our Tenerife South Airport car hire guide for the full route.
Can I drive to Masca and park there?
You can drive the TF-436 to Masca village — gradients up to 16%, tight hairpin bends, and a two-hour parking limit in the village (08:00–14:00, enforced with towing). You cannot drive to the gorge hike: private vehicles are prohibited, and access is only via the TITSA 355 shuttle from Santiago del Teide (Fri–Sun, every 20 minutes). The hike requires advance booking at caminobarrancodemasca.com (adult fee €40.66); check current boat-return logistics on the official portal when booking.
Is the road to Punta de Teno open to cars?
No. The TF-445 has been closed to private vehicles permanently, and since 19 January 2026 it is also subject to 10 months of roadworks. Access is by TITSA bus 369 from Buenavista del Norte only (around €1 each way, approximately 20 minutes). Do not attempt to drive past the barrier.
Do I need an IDP with a UK licence?
No. A UK photocard licence is valid for tourists in Spain under the bilateral agreement of March 2023. An IDP is required only for the old paper-style UK licence or Crown dependency licences (Gibraltar, Jersey, Guernsey, Isle of Man).
Manual or automatic for Los Gigantes?
Automatic. The resort's streets mean repeated hill starts, tight one-way systems and narrow lanes where a stall or roll-back is genuinely inconvenient. EcoCar's automatic hybrid fleet starts from €43/day; Autoreisen includes automatics in its weekly rates. Book early — automatics are the first category to sell out, particularly in winter and half-term.
Where can I park in Los Gigantes?
There is no large free car park in the resort core. The marina car park charges around €1.90/hour; the main private garage option is parkinglosgigantes.com. Hotel rates vary considerably: Landmar Playa La Arena €8/day, Barceló Santiago up to €22/day. Day-trippers should park in Puerto de Santiago and walk the short coast path in — easier than hunting for a marina space. See things to do near Los Gigantes for day-trip planning that factors in parking.
Can I take a hire car to another Canary island?
No — virtually all Tenerife hire contracts prohibit taking the vehicle off the island. Inter-island travel means flying (Binter Canarias, Canary Fly) or ferry from the south. Confirm with your firm if you have unusual plans, but inter-island use is not a standard permission.
